How to Add Lyrics to YouTube Music: An Artist’s Guide

To add lyrics to YouTube Music, submit your song’s lyrics through a lyric provider such as Musixmatch or LyricFind. With Musixmatch Pro, verify your artist, choose the correct recording, add the words, sync them if needed and check delivery status. Submitting lyrics and seeing them appear in YouTube Music are separate steps.

If you only want to read lyrics while listening, open the song’s playback screen and look for the lyrics control. If lyrics are missing, the artist submission process below explains what can be checked.

1. Choose a lyric submission route

Start by checking whether your distributor, label or publisher already manages your lyrics. If they do, ask which provider receives them and how corrections should be submitted. This gives you a clear contact when something needs fixing.

CD Baby recommends Musixmatch and LyricFind for distributing approved lyrics to music platforms. Musixmatch’s current partner coverage specifically lists YouTube Music for plain lyrics and line-by-line sync, but not word-by-word sync or translations.

You do not need to repeat every possible submission route blindly. Establish who manages the song, then use their process consistently.

2. Verify your artist in Musixmatch Pro

Open Musixmatch Pro, create or sign into your account, and add the artist you represent to your roster. Complete the verification requested in your account before editing that artist’s catalogue.

Artist verification and identity verification are worth checking separately. Musixmatch’s delivery guidance says users on its free plan must verify their identity to enable delivery to partner platforms. Having lyrics visible on Musixmatch alone does not prove they have been distributed.

3. Select the exact recording

Choose the song under your verified artist. Before typing anything, compare the title, artist credit, version and duration with the track on YouTube Music.

A studio recording, live performance, acoustic version and radio edit can need different words or timings. For example, timing lyrics against a version with a long spoken introduction will put every line in the wrong place on an edit that removes it.

Keep the exact YouTube Music track link and your release identifiers handy. If the song is missing from your provider’s catalogue, resolve that catalogue issue with the provider or distributor before editing a similarly named track.

4. Add accurate lyrics, then sync them

Plain lyrics contain the words; synced lyrics also contain timing information. Finish the transcription first, then align the lines with the recording if you want timed lyrics.

Musixmatch’s official add-and-sync guide supports its Pro website and app. It specifies either a Spotify Premium account or your song’s audio file for this workflow.

1. Select the song from your roster. Use the recording you checked in the previous step.
2. Transcribe while listening. Include the words actually sung and write repeated sections out in full. Avoid shortcuts such as “chorus x2” and copying lyrics from other websites.
3. Review the text. Check spelling and missing lines against the entire recording, following the provider’s current formatting guidelines.
4. Open the sync editor. Match each line to the start of the vocal phrase, then replay it and adjust early or late entries.
5. Review and submit. Listen through the ending too, and complete the save or submission actions shown in your account.

For YouTube Music, focus on accurate line-by-line timing. Word-by-word tools elsewhere in the provider’s product do not mean YouTube Music receives that format.

5. Check delivery, then check YouTube Music

Delivery to a provider, delivery to its partners and display in YouTube Music are different checkpoints. In Musixmatch Pro, open the song from your roster and read its distribution status.

• No status: Musixmatch says lyrics have not yet been added.
• Delivered to Musixmatch: the lyrics are available there, but have not been sent to streaming partners. Check that you used Pro, the artist is in your roster and any required identity verification is complete.
• Delivered to Partners: the provider has sent the lyrics onwards. The receiving platform may still need time to update.

These labels come from Musixmatch’s distribution-status guide. It does not promise an exact time for lyrics to appear on third-party services. Treat a delivery estimate as a delivery estimate, not a guaranteed YouTube Music go-live time.

Once delivery is confirmed, open the exact released track in YouTube Music. Check the displayed words and, if timed lyrics appear, whether they follow the vocals correctly.

Why are my lyrics still missing or incorrect?

Check the submission stage before changing the words again. The useful next action depends on where the process stopped:

• Lyrics are on Musixmatch but nowhere else: check partner-delivery status, roster ownership and verification first.
• The provider confirms delivery, but YouTube Music shows nothing: allow for the platform update, confirm the exact track link and ask the provider to investigate if the problem persists.
• The wrong words appear: compare the recording version, then correct the text through the provider managing that entry.
• The words are right but the timing is wrong: check that the sync used the same audio version and duration. Review the timing before resubmitting.
• Lyrics appear on one device but not another: compare the same track in an updated app and another client. That comparison helps separate a display issue from a missing submission.

For a useful support request, include the artist and song title, exact YouTube Music URL, provider song link or ID, submission date, current status and a screenshot of the problem. Say whether the issue is missing text, incorrect words or timing. That is much more actionable than “my lyrics don’t work.”

YouTube Music lyrics: common questions

Can I upload an LRC file directly to YouTube Music?

For an artist’s released catalogue, use the provider workflow above rather than looking for an LRC upload in the listener app. A local timed-lyrics file is not evidence that the lyrics have been submitted or delivered to YouTube Music.

Will adding lyrics to a YouTube description or captions do the same thing?

No. Video descriptions and captions serve your YouTube video; they are separate from provider-delivered song lyrics. To caption a video you manage, use YouTube’s subtitle and caption instructions. Do not treat a caption upload as confirmation that the song’s lyrics are available in YouTube Music.

Do I need Spotify Premium to submit through Musixmatch?
